THE AVALANCHES AND THEIR FROSTWAVE ANALOG EFFECTS

Q: How do Melbourne Australia's The Avalanches perform a record thousands of samples strong live?

A: By utilising the un-equalled 'sample mutating' capabilities of FROSTWAVE ANALOG EFFECTS.

Frostwave analog effects conceives and creates it's world renowned analog effects stomp boxes out of a modest Victorian townhouse situated in the leafy inner northern Melbourne Suburb of Carlton.

The street itself is pretty inconspicuous, a nice tree lined median strip, However if you stand on the doorstep of Frostwave's Paul Francis Perry's home and headquarters you will see a narrow two story art-deco townhouse painted a garish shade of puce.

It is within this share house that the Avalanches started rehearsing an oddball combination of skewy guitar music with samples that eventually evolved into the world renowned 1000 sample strong masterpiece that is THE AVALANCHES "Since I left you"..The album has since debuted in the UK top twenty and has been growing in critical and commercial acclaim.

Some years before 'Since I Left You" the Avalanches exploded on to the Live Australian music scene. After just one show they were hand picked to support the 'Jon Spencer Blues Explosion" on their 1997 tour.Their live show then being a mixture of live bass and drums mixed up with analog keyboard craziness, samplers, vocoders and a theremin.

When the Avalanches were putting together their recent live tour of the UK and Europe for JULY/AUGUST 2001 they took along their Akai S900, and S5000 samplers, Rane TTM54i DJ mixer,4 technics SHDX 1200 mixers, Roland Midi Keyboards PC-100,2 yamaha o1v mixing desks,2 line 6 bass pods and Helicon Voice prisms for live vocalprocessing, electrix filter factory and roland space echo for f.o.h manipulation of the drum kit,an akai MPC 1200 xl,Technics SL1200 Turntables, Nord vocoder, Korg synthesiser MS2000, a homemade Theremin, a roland sh1200 analogue synth and a korg bass analogue synth.

True to their roots particular inclusions to their arsenal of gear included their Frostwave Resonator ,Frostwave Funk a Duck.. and Frostwaves Latest, The SpaceBeam theremin. Melbournes' Frostwave Effects contain the insides of old school Analog Modular Synthesiers Retro-fitted into robust, musicially versatile, fully tweakable stomp boxes.

The Resonator Filter and Funk a Duck with their high and low pass filters and enveloping being used as "Live Sample Mutators" as described the bands musical epicentre Rob Chater.

The Spacebeam (Which is a Theremin built to filter signals from other instruments and samples) has been gaffer taped to the front of their live bass rig, run through the output of a Line6 bass amp emulator, it's theramin like magnetic field being used to create a "Crazy theramin controlled bass synth,"
